spreading her love to uganda.

well, we raised almost enough at the orange leaf fundraiser to sponsor one child through unified 4 unfat. purcell marian is pledging the remaining balance for ali for that child. after a quick convo between ben and i, we decided one child wasn’t enough. we are using some funds from the santa pub crawl and the new years eve event with brideFace to sponsor a few more kids. we know if she had extra cash laying around, this is one thing she’d love to do. why not spread her love across the world! 🙂 these kids will now enjoy the luxury of education in ali’s name.

yes, that’s cotton candy. the girl had an unhealthy addiction. she needed an intervention.

all of ali’s friends were in a miami, for a bachelorette party. she ordered a ginormous bundle of cotton candy. annnnnd ate. it. all.

hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather! peace, mel.

leaving her legacy in books…

i can’t believe it’s already february. holy. cow. in less than a couple weeks we’re having the book fair, another opportunity to do some good in my sister’s name. 🙂 readers hideaway has decided to extend the event to two days for the folks who won’t be able to make it on monday. you can see on the flyer below the dates, time and location. i’ve seen a bunch of their books and they have a great selection of top quality for CHEAP prices! though the books can make great gifts, you don’t even have to buy them for yourself, you can just pick some out to donate. our top priorities are the schools/libraries where she personally attended and worked. this is our first opportunity, but we plan on gathering and donating all year long. i’d love for this to become so big that we can donate to many more places, across the tristate. also, there will be plenty of labels, so if you would like to add a label to the books you purchased for yourself, then you are welcome to. just another reminder to live our lives selflessly every time we open up the book and see her name.

here is the label adam designed to be placed inside. (LOVE IT!!)

i decided to show it off in one of ali’s favorite books i have here at home, “silverlicious.”

some of you have also asked about dropping off NEW books to be donated as well. i know some people have connections within their own work and that’s great, you are welcome to drop those off and we will see they are placed somewhere in her name. just make sure they are kept separately and are given to someone within our family or close friends. i don’t want readers hideaway to have to worry about books other than what they are selling! we encourage you to buy all books at that fair because the prices will be much more discounted than in stores. hope to see you there!

peace, melanie

ps. if you are out of town, you can always mail a check to me PAYABLE TO READERS HIDEAWAY, and i will donate books for you!

a success at orange leaf!

well i’d say the week was a success. i think my family alone bought enough yogurt to sponsor a small village! 🙂 we all went multiple times through out the week, ahemmm, because we wanted to support the cause! 🙂 on wed the manager said sales were booming, comparable to summer. that’s pretty cool. they had the place decorated with pink balloons and hearts all over. we took some iphone images each time we were there to share with you all.

nori got used to going to Orange Leaf after dinner every night.  she started saying, “go get ice cream now mommy?” i told the owner he needs to open one on the westside, because i’m certain we would go there way too often!

there was always a bunch of people, and always a line!

though i thought the cotton candy flavor was good, i mostly stuck with vanilla and brownies! don’t be fooled, adam didn’t choose healthy toppings every time.

the owner came in and met our family on wednesday night. both him and the manager are super nice guys. they were thrilled with how well the fundraiser went. they asked the fam to come together for an image for their facebook page.

they were so amazed by the amount of people around the tristate that love ali. they said they would be honored to continue carrying the cotton candy flavor ALONG WITH it’s name. now that is freaking cool. i bet if ali was there to see her name on the wall like this, she would have walked around asking people if they wanted her autograph. for sure. ha!

thanks for everyone who came out. and a huge thanks to hyde park orange leaf for doing this in memory of my sister.  i’m not sure if i will know how much we raised or not, but i’m certain there will be a happy child some where in the world, who will be grateful to ali and all of you wonderful people for helping save their life. thanks!

fill your belly for a good cause.

just a reminder that THIS week is the week Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt in Hyde Park is donating 10% of their sales to Unified for Unifat. a child will be sponsored in ali’s name, hopefully for a long time if we stuff our faces enough! 🙂 see the flyer below. and get this, just for this week only they are having a new flavor called:

ALI’S ROCKIN PINK COTTON CANDY!

that’s pretty awesome if you ask me! so try and stop by, it’s delicious. so delicious that my always weight conscious husband wants to go every day this week. now THAT speaks volumes.  hope to see you there! YUMMMMMMMM.

peace, melanie

front page of the enquirer, the news, what’s next?

i’m continuously amazed by how many people she is touching, 2 months later. it’s crazy. i’m so proud to be her sister.

tuesday night Purcell Marian hosted “hoops for hope,” a benefit for cancer research.  they decided to donate money to coach’s mom and ali, who both lost the battle to cancer. since we have the book fair coming up, i decided to take ali’s share and donate books back to the PM library. her legacy will live on forever in all the books we pretended loved to read in high school. the news was there to cover the event, you can watch the CLIP on their website. (the headline is a little harsh. yuck.)

i was given a heads up that channel 5 was going to call me for an interview. i figured i could answer a couple questions over the phone, no big deal. when the reporter called me and said she was heading to my house for an on camera interview i got a weeee bit nervous. here’s the thing. blogging is completely different than on the spot answering questions…ON TV. many might not realize, but it takes me hours to blog. even when i’m writing about clients, i write, delete, write, delete. i never ever stick with what comes out first. when talking about ali, my emotions are unpredictable. sometimes i can completely detach myself and talk about the whole situation as if she’s a random person. other times, i can’t say her name without bawling. britt and i decided it also depends on the person we are talking to. if it’s someone we’ve known forever and really knew ali, emotion overload. it’s so strange. grieving is very complicated.

there was one thing i knew for sure, the reporter would hit a heart string too quick and i’d be done. blotchy red face, ugly cry on tv. not cool. and not to mention i would probably say something really dumb. “i’m melanie paaace?” (ron burgundy style from anchor man. one of ali’s favs) once it’s out there, i can’t delete it. i’m totally not articulate, but i still have to think about things i say. no joke, i even write my fb statuses at least 3 times before posting. so i passed the torch to mom. 🙂 it’s only fair someone else represents our family for once anyway! i’m the one blogging, people always hear what i have to say. ben tried to dodge his debut, but they came to his house. ha! they did a wonderful job. what they said was perfect. i would have had to have 12 takes and mass editing to not sound like a blubbering fool. i’m sure ali was present and holding their hands as they fought the tears.

peace. melanie.

carrying on Ali’s name…

i know i write about all the amazing things ali did and the generous life she lead all the time. well if you didn’t know ali personally, there is something you should know. the girl had a sweet tooth. most of my family does, actually. we all have loads of candy stored in cabinets and on top of our fridges. adam used to refer to my purse as my personal “candy store.” but ali was the worst, fo sho. she HAD TO HAVE a piece of candy/chocolate after every meal. she coined the phrase, “breakfast NERDS.” she washed down her veggies with twizzlers. she even convinced Purcell Marian to celebrate national cotton candy day (we thought she made it up but it’s real, i googled) and had a machine in the cafe to help fundraise for different events. in fact, there was a point in her battle that she was supposed to stop eating carbs, sugar, etc. we thought she was doing really well. (except during chemo, cause if bread was the only thing that would stay down then obviously she’d eat it.) however, to this day we are still finding all these stashes of candy. the trunk in her car had bags of cotton candy. i’ve found skittles in the pockets of her clothes i’ve worn (of course i have to smile about it). french chews in dresser drawers. brown bags of assorted candy in baskets in her living room. it was like she was an alcoholic hiding bottles of vodka. but it was gummy bears, blow pops and reese cups. anyway. my point being, if you read the flyer below, you will see why i encourage you to indulge your sweet tooth on ali’s behalf. she was the moderator of unified for UNIFAT for sometime at Purcell Marian and the idea a child will be saved in her name is pretty damn cool. if we all come together and buy tons of yogurt, i bet she can save more than one. a little yogurt never hurt anyone anyway. do it.

the next event is also pretty awesome too. my sister in law’s dad owns a book company, Reader’s Hideaway. he is generously donating these books in Ali’s name across the tristate. i was able to go through a box of his books before christmas and they are all top quality. it made me so sad while i did it because if ali was here, she would have bought up half his inventory by now. she bought our kids books for every holiday and often just for fun. she LOVED kids books. don’t worry, they will be selling many more books for adults too.  so if you are a westsider and wanted to stop by MSJ on Monday, February 13 from 11-7 you can chip in for a great cause.  we hope to put books in the libraries of the schools ali attended, as well as where she worked. website speed test . two of her favorite jobs were being a librarian in the west end of cincy as well as in the inner city in Rhode Island when she was in Americorps. plus, every library could use a little more pink inside! duh.

have a great weekend. peace, melanie

She Went In Peace …

For those coming to this site for the first time, please take a few minutes to read the beautiful words written by Ali’s sister, Melanie. Please send your love, thoughts and prayers to both the Nunery and Tracy families. And you can still help by donating to the Rock Pink 4 Ali fund.

a (pink)celebration of a beautiful life. (link will take you to melanie’s blog)

hey ali,

what’d you think of that 2 hr wait last night? 6 solid hours of people lined up to see you. 1200+ people coming to support our family and tell us how much you have changed their life. i keep wondering if you can still feel emotions besides happiness? as we stood together holding hands above you, weeping, could you feel our sadness? what was it like to look down on yourself like that? did you feel loved?

A Sea of Pink
